“I still remember Shahenshah, the bull I grew very attached to. He would even respond to his name when I called out. Along with Shahenshah, I used to feed many other cows and bulls every day. But one night, during my usual feeding rounds, I found out that Sahenshah had been attacked. He was bleeding a lot and was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition was heartbreaking. He was so sick that he died within a few minutes, right before my eyes. That’s when I knew I had to do something more for these innocent animals.” - Kapil Anand, Co- Founder, Gau Nandi Sewa
Kapil Anand then joined hands with Arjun Saini to start Gau Nandi Sewa in 2018. This hospital cum shelter home in Noida is responsible for saving over 10,000 cows so far who were injured and suffering. They currently have over 400 cows at their shelter, all of whom have been badly injured or have serious health issues.
What Began As A Feeding Service Soon Turned Into Something Bigger
Kapil grew up watching his mother feed cows and bulls ever since he was a little child. She would feed them rotis every day with so much love. But it wasn’t until Kapil was a little older and saw the living conditions of these animals that he started feeding them himself.
“So many of them eat rotten food, rummaging through garbage to look for a little bit to eat. Many of them are abused and abandoned. I’ve seen cows who have been injured with blades, hit during accidents, have acid thrown on them and so much more. They deserve all the love and care they can get and it’s our responsibility to look after them.”
The team at Gau Nandi Sewa gives food and medical treatment to these cows and bulls and looks after them like they would their own children. They have a full-time vet and ambulance service with which they’re able to provide timely treatment to these voiceless souls. Even today, they receive over 15 calls every day to rescue and treat cows.
However, all of this hasn’t been without its fair share of challenges. During the pandemic, Kapil and Arjun struggling to continue feeding the cows at the shelter, but with help from well wishers, friends and family they were able to make it through. However, now they need your support to continue this selfless service.
